In a 29gal freshwater – How long before adding fish? What types? How many of each?

about 12 hours ago, we just set up a 29gal freshwater tank kit that included an Aqua-Tech 20-40 power filter with bio-fiber, a heater, and a hood with light, as well as Aqua-Safe solution to remove harmful chemicals from tap water. In short, directions included in kit said to wait 24 hrs after starting filter & heater, then add 2-3 fish & then add 2-3 more once a week until desired amount of fish was reached. Online, I’ve read alot of cycling techniques & none i came across were similar to the directions that came with this kit (would hope the kit directions aren’t leading us astray). We would like to have a small variety of non-aggressive fish that won’t grow bigger that 1-2 inches long each. Any suggestions? Also what would be the ideal number & type of fish? Read that one gallon of water per one inch of adult fish size was sufficient. So, does that mean we can have as many as 29 one-inch-sized fish , or perhaps any combo of of sizes, totalling no more than 29 inches in length?

Check out this website, it won’t lead you astray. It explains how to get your tank up and running, all about cycling,etc. I know there is alot of info out there that seem to conflict, but I think this is because fish keeping isn’t an exact science.
The 1″/gal. rule is not extremely accurate as there are many contributing factors. (cold water fish need more space,certain species of fish will be more aggressive if crowded, filtration, how dedicated you are to regular water changes-All these factors come into play when deciding how to stock your tank)
My suggestion is to research what fish you think you may want and see what they are compatible with. I have found this site very helpful when stocking my tank. It breaks up into several different communities of fish that would make good tankmates.
